The Gift of Rest

May 7, 2025    Connor Gwin

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

– Matthew 11:28–30

As I prepare to begin a three-month sabbatical on May 12, these words from Jesus feel especially personal. “Come to me… and I will give you rest.” Not a suggestion. Not a reward for performance. But a promise – freely given to the weary, the burdened, the stretched-thin and soul-tired.

There is a kind of rest that only Christ can give. It is deeper than sleep or a vacation, more lasting than a break from routine. Jesus speaks of a rest for our souls – a rest that renews us from the inside out. It’s a rest that begins not when our to-do list is complete, but when we let go of trying to carry it all on our own.

This passage invites us not only to rest in Christ, but also to learn from Him. He offers us a yoke – an image of partnership, of rhythm, of walking with Him instead of striving alone. It’s not a burden, but a gift. His gentleness and humility invite us into a new way of being, where grace sets the pace.

I enter this sabbatical with deep gratitude – for the gift of time, for the space to slow down and listen, and especially for the community of Christ Church. Thank you for being a parish that understands the sacred value of rest. Your trust and generosity make this time of renewal possible.

Sabbatical is a word rooted in Sabbath – a holy pause woven into the fabric of creation. As I step into this season, I do so not to escape ministry, but to be refreshed for it. I hope to return with a clearer mind, a fuller heart, and a deeper well from which to serve.

Whether or not you’re stepping into a sabbatical yourself, Jesus’ invitation stands for all of us. Wherever you are today – overwhelmed, exhausted, in need of peace – may you hear His voice calling gently: Come to me… and I will give you rest.
