Yes, God is Real

Each week in our staff meeting a member of our staff opens our time together with a devotion. This week Lesley Peace, who is a part of our mission and outreach team and an AME Zion ordained reverend, blessed us by singing two hymns from the AME Zion hymnal. One of those hymns was “Yes, God is Real:”

There are some things
I may not know
There are some places
I can't go
But I'm sure
Of this one thing
That God is real

When the disciples were gathered together following the death of Jesus they wondered whether God was real at all. They weren’t feeling it. Their heads were still spinning from Jesus’s death and resurrection, and ascension into heaven. They wondered what was next in their life and ministry.

Then on the day of the Pentecost – which we celebrate this Sunday – the spirit came among them and gave them the power of God to help them restart their lives.

Are you feeling overwhelmed by life today? The best advice I have been given when times are difficult is to “make space for God.” I find when I leave God out of the equation, I feel more fear. As I try harder to fix problems on my own and regain a sense of control, I realize, in the belly of the whale, that I never had control in the first place.

You are not alone. God is near you - longing for you to let God in, to do the work only God can do.

Make space for God. Ask God to be your strength and power today. I believe as you grow in prayer, and return to church on Sundays to be with your fellow parishioners in worship and fellowship, you will sense deeply, like the disciples did and as the hymn goes, “Yes, God is real; real in my soul.”

In hope and joyful expectation,
Chip
